Changing Visa Status in Korea

Passport with boarding pass, changing visa status for Korea
Not every visa path requires leaving Korea. Some foreigners can apply for a change of status at immigration after gaining admission, a job offer, or family eligibility. Others must apply for a new visa sticker at a Korean embassy abroad. This guide explains how to tell the difference and prepare documents.

Common status-change paths

  • D-4 → D-2. Language student admitted to a degree program
  • D-2 → job-based visa. After graduation with an eligible offer (category-specific)
  • Study / work → family categories. Marriage or dependent routes when eligible

Eligibility is nationality- and category-specific. Call 1345 or check HiKorea before resigning housing or booking flights.

Documents immigration usually reviews

  • Passport, ARC, and application forms
  • Proof of new eligibility (Standard Admission Letter, employment contract, etc.)
  • Financial evidence for study routes
  • Translated/apostilled foreign credentials when required
  • Fee payment and photos per current specs

HezoKorea builds English checklists and reviews scans via our visa document service.

Timing and gaps in status

Apply before your current stay expires. A gap can force departure. If your category cannot change inside Korea, plan embassy processing time in your home country or a third country that accepts your application.

Frequently asked questions

Can every D-4 student change to D-2 in Korea?
Not automatically. You need admission documents and must meet immigration rules for your nationality. Some applicants are directed to embassy issuance instead.
