GKS Scholarship Guide for International Students

Graduates in caps and gowns celebrating at commencement
The Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) is one of the best-known funded pathways to study in Korea. Competition is high, deadlines are strict, and document standards are exacting. This guide outlines the two main tracks and how HezoKorea helps applicants prepare clean, embassy-ready files, without promising award results.

Embassy track vs university track

  • Embassy track. Apply through the Korean embassy/consulate in your country; you may list multiple universities.
  • University track. Apply directly to designated Korean universities participating that year.

Quota, eligible countries, and forms change each cycle. Always download the current NIIED / Study in Korea guidelines for your intake year.

Documents that usually decide completeness

  • Application forms and personal statement / study plan
  • Graduation certificates and transcripts (often apostilled)
  • Recommendation letters on official letterhead
  • Proof of citizenship and family relationship docs (as listed)
  • Language scores (TOPIK, TOEFL, IELTS) when required
  • Medical assessment forms at the stage specified in the guide

Missing apostilles or incorrect translation format is a common reason files stall. Pair this with our apostille vs notarization guide.

How a Study in Korea consultant helps

HezoKorea does not award scholarships. We help you:

  1. Map deadlines for your nationality and track
  2. Build a document checklist with translation/apostille order
  3. Review scans for name consistency and completeness
  4. Prepare parallel university admission options if GKS is plan A
