Korea Post EMS Weight, Size & Box Guide

What is EMS (Korea Post)?
EMS (Express Mail Service) is Korea Post’s international express product, the same network used by post offices worldwide. For HezoKorea proxy orders it is the default option when your destination and parcel size qualify. Tracking, customs declaration, and door delivery are included.
We also offer UPS Expedited Shipping when EMS is unavailable, when a parcel exceeds EMS limits, or when you want a private-carrier timeline. Your quote names the carrier before you pay.

EMS weight limit
Korea Post accepts EMS parcels up to 30 kg (66 lb) for many destinations. A large group of countries, including several in the Middle East, Africa, and parts of Asia, cap EMS at 20 kg (44 lb). The limit that applies is the destination country’s limit, not a single global number.
Chargeable weight is the higher of:
- Actual weight, what the scale reads, rounded up to the next 500 g rate band
- Volumetric (dimensional) weight.
length × width × height (cm) ÷ 6,000
If your combined haul would exceed the destination EMS cap, we split into two EMS boxes or switch that shipment to UPS Expedited, we confirm the option on your quote.
EMS size limit
Korea Post applies the Universal Postal Union size standard for most EMS destinations:
| Rule | Typical EMS maximum |
|---|---|
| Longest side | ≤ 1.5 m (150 cm / 59 in) |
| Length + girth | ≤ 3 m (300 cm). Girth = 2 × width + 2 × height |
| Some destinations | Stricter, e.g. longest side 1.05 m, or length + girth 2 m. We check your country before packing. |
A parcel can fail EMS even when it is under 20 kg if one side is too long (rolled posters, a lightstick box, a large tote). In that case UPS Expedited is usually the better fit.
Official destination rules are published on the Korea Post EMS country conditions page. Limits can change; we re-check at ship time.
Official Korea Post boxes we use for EMS
Korea Post sells numbered cartons at every post office. HezoKorea packs into these (or matching custom cartons) so the parcel already fits EMS handling. Dimensions below are inner length × width × height in centimetres.
| Box | Size (cm) | Sum of sides | Volumetric wt. | Typical proxy use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0호 | 17 × 13 × 9 | 39 cm | 0.33 kg | Photocards, small jewelry, sample sachets |
| 1호 | 22 × 19 × 9 | 50 cm | 0.63 kg | A few photocards with sleeves, small cosmetics |
| 2호 | 27 × 18 × 15 | 60 cm | 1.22 kg | One K-pop album, compact skincare |
| 2-1호 | 35 × 25 × 10 | 70 cm | 1.46 kg | Flat albums, books, thin merch, extra length, low height |
| 3호 | 34 × 25 × 21 | 80 cm | 2.98 kg | Most mixed hauls: 2–3 albums + small extras |
| 4호 | 41 × 31 × 28 | 100 cm | 5.93 kg | Larger beauty + merch consolidations |
| 5호 | 48 × 38 × 34 | 120 cm | 10.34 kg | Bulky consolidations still within EMS size |
| EMS M | 38 × 30 × 25 | 93 cm | 4.75 kg | Dedicated international EMS carton (medium) |
| EMS L | 54 × 39 × 34 | 127 cm | 11.93 kg | Dedicated international EMS carton (large) |
Volumetric weight uses Korea Post’s EMS formula (÷ 6,000). Actual postage still depends on destination and the higher of scale vs volumetric weight.
EMS M and EMS L are international-only cartons sold at Korea Post for EMS (not for domestic 택배). We use them when the numbered boxes are a poor fit or when we want extra crush resistance for a long-haul flight.
A former 6호 size (about 52 × 48 × 40 cm) is no longer a standard post-office SKU. Oversized items go in a custom carton and, if they miss EMS size rules, on UPS Expedited.
How HezoKorea chooses a box
- We receive your Coupang, Bunjang, Olive Young, and other parcels at our Seoul hub.
- We remove extra marketplace air pillows, add protection for photocards, liquids, and glass, then pick the smallest Korea Post box that still ships safely.
- We measure actual weight and volumetric weight, then check your country’s EMS cap.
- If EMS qualifies, we tender the box at Korea Post. If not, we quote UPS Expedited for that shipment (or split into two EMS boxes when that is cheaper).
You do not need to pick a box number when you order. Mention “hold and consolidate” if you want more items to land first, see our consolidation guide.
EMS vs UPS Expedited
| EMS (Korea Post) | UPS Expedited | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Most proxy hauls under destination weight/size caps | Heavier, oversized, or EMS-restricted destinations |
| Typical transit | About 3–7 business days after dispatch (country-dependent) | Often similar or slightly faster on some lanes |
| Weight cap | 20 kg or 30 kg by country | Higher, we confirm on quote |
| Customs | Korea Post files the EMS customs form | UPS files the commercial invoice |
Include your full delivery address when you submit a proxy request so we can price the correct carrier. Import duties, if any, are charged by your country, see our import duties guide.
