Student Housing in Korea: Dorms, Goshiwon & Leases

Bright apartment living space suitable for student housing

Where you live affects cost, commute, and your ARC address registration. International students usually choose a university dormitory, a goshiwon, or a one-room (원룸) lease. This guide compares options and the paperwork each path needs.

Housing options compared

  • University dormitory — Convenient, often cheaper, application windows tied to admission. Spaces are limited for new internationals.
  • Goshiwon / shared housing — Furnished, monthly rent, fewer deposit barriers; rooms are small.
  • One-room lease — More independence; expect deposit (보증금), monthly rent, and a Korean-language contract.

Documents landlords and dorms ask for

  • Passport and visa / ARC (or Certificate of Admission if pre-arrival)
  • University enrollment or admission letter
  • Korean phone number (often required for contracts and utilities)
  • Proof of finances or guarantor — less common for dorms, more for private leases

Lease contracts in Korean may need explanation or translation for your records — our document services team can help review key clauses.

Housing and ARC address rules

After you move, report your address within 14 days for alien registration updates. Dormitory confirmation letters are usually accepted; private leases should match the address you report. See our ARC address-change guide and ARC application guide.

Câu hỏi thường gặp

Can I arrange housing before I arrive?
Dormitory applications are often online after admission. Private leases are harder without a local contact — many students book short-term housing first, then sign a longer lease.
