TOPIK Exam Guide for Korean University Admission

Student reviewing language textbooks and notes for an exam

Most Korean-taught degree programs expect a TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) score. English-track majors may waive TOPIK but still ask for TOEFL or IELTS. This guide explains which level to aim for, how the exam works, and how to time your test around university deadlines — with support from a Study in Korea consultant when documents and visa steps follow.

What is TOPIK?

TOPIK is Korea’s official Korean-language proficiency test. Universities and immigration use it to confirm you can follow lectures and campus life. There are two tracks:

  • TOPIK I — Levels 1–2 (beginner)
  • TOPIK II — Levels 3–6 (intermediate to advanced)

Degree programs almost always want TOPIK II. Language institutes (D-4) usually do not require TOPIK for beginner enrollment.

Typical score targets by program

Program typeCommon expectation
Korean-taught bachelor’sTOPIK 3–4 (competitive majors often 4+)
Graduate (Korean-taught)TOPIK 4–5 depending on department
English-taught degreesTOPIK often optional; TOEFL/IELTS required
Language institute (D-4)Usually no TOPIK for entry

Always confirm the current requirement on the university’s international admissions page — thresholds change by intake.

How to time TOPIK with applications

  1. Shortlist programs and note whether they need TOPIK or English scores.
  2. Register for TOPIK early — seats in some countries fill quickly.
  3. Keep a buffer: score reports can take weeks after the test date.
  4. If your score is short, consider a language-institute term first, then apply for D-2 / status change later.
