Korea ARC Application Guide for Foreigners

Traveler passport and tickets prepared for immigration

The Alien Registration Card (외국인등록증) is your official ID for life in Korea — banking, phone contracts, employment, and immigration compliance all depend on it. Most foreigners on stays over 90 days must apply within a set deadline. This guide walks through the full process.

Who needs an ARC?

Foreign nationals staying in Korea more than 90 days on most visa types must register for an ARC. Short-term tourists (typically under 90 days) generally do not need one.

Common visa types requiring registration include work visas (E-series), student visas (D-2, D-4), family visas (F-series), and long-term residency categories. Requirements vary — always confirm for your specific status on HiKorea or by calling the Immigration Contact Center at 1345 (multilingual support available).

Application deadline

You must apply within 90 days of entering Korea on a visa that requires registration. Missing the deadline can result in fines and complications for visa extensions or status changes.

Important: Do not wait until day 89. Immigration offices can be busy, and missing documents cause delays. Start preparing documents in your first month.

Required documents (general checklist)

Exact requirements depend on your visa type. This is the core set most applicants need:

  • Completed alien registration application form
  • Valid passport
  • Passport-size color photo (3.5 cm × 4.5 cm, white background)
  • Registration fee (approximately ₩30,000 — confirm current amount on HiKorea)
  • Proof of residence in Korea (lease contract, accommodation confirmation)
  • Status-specific documents — see below

By visa type (examples)

Application process step by step

  1. Gather documents. Use HiKorea's checklist for your visa type. Documents in foreign languages may need certified translation.
  2. Book an appointment. Visit hikorea.go.kr → Visit reservation → select your local immigration office. Walk-ins are limited; appointments are strongly recommended.
  3. Visit the immigration office. Bring originals and copies. Biometric data (fingerprints) and photo are taken on-site.
  4. Pay the fee. At the office or online depending on your application method.
  5. Receive your ARC. Typically within a few days to two weeks — you may receive a receipt first and collect the card later, or receive it by mail depending on office procedure.

After you receive your ARC

  • Report address changes within 14 days of moving
  • Carry your ARC or passport when required by law
  • Renew before expiry — start the renewal process at least one month early
